How To Properly Clean Gutters

If you can safely access your gutters, routine cleaning can help prevent damage to your roof and property. If you have a tall multi-story home or building, it’s probably safer to hire a professional to do the job.

If you decide to do the job yourself, here are some tips and safety guidelines to make the job easier:

  1. Wear shoes that are secure and have good traction. Wear a long-sleeve shirt, rubber gloves and safety glasses.
  2. Use an extension ladder. Ladder stabilizers are recommended for additional safety and to protect the structure.
  3. Always stay clear of power lines.
  4. A plastic tarp can be used to protect grass and landscaping.
  5. Use a bucket to carry your tools and use a hook to attach it to the ladder. Carrying tools in your pocket when climbing a ladder can cause injury if you fall.
  6. Use a plastic scoop or a toy shovel to remove debris.
  7. Use a hose to flush out the muck. Note any leaks or holes.
  8. If the downspout cannot be cleared with the pressure of a hose, a plumber’s snake can be used to remove the obstruction.
